About AMEA

The Arizona Music Educators Association was established in 1939 as a cooperative effort of music educators. Since that time, the association has become affiliated with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in 1983. Special interests in the Association are represented by three constituent organizations; The Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA), The Arizona Choral Educators (ACE), and The Arizona Society for General Music (AzSGM).

There are a number of areas within the Association that are led by appointed leaders. These include the Arizona Coalition For Music Education, College Music Educators, Adjudicator Training, Membership, Professional Development, Retired Members, Tri-M, Multi-Cultural Awareness, Music Technology, IN-Ovations, and Student CompositionAMEA supports the activities of the NAfME Collegiate chapters (student), and Tri-M chapters, high school and junior high school music student honorary organizations in Arizona.

Because Arizona is a "unified" state, all members hold joint membership in both the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Arizona Music Educators Association (AMEA). This membership is also a requisite for membership in the constituent organizations. Membership types are: Active, Collegiate Membership, Retired Membership, and Life Membership. The association also offers a Sustaining membership for those individuals, institutions and corporations who wish to offer assistance to the music education profession in Arizona. These are solely for AMEA and are not dependent upon holding membership in any other organization. AMEA provides recertification documentation for member participation at in-service and assessment events.
